# Mesut Ozil close to signing new contract

Mesut Ozil is said to be closing in on signing a new contract with Arsenal, according to the [Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/11/21/hector-bellerin-signs-new-six-year-arsenal-contract-ending-specu/).

The news comes after the Gunners signed Hector Bellerin to a new six-and-a-half year contract which runs until the summer of 2023 which saw his wages more than double from £40,000-a-week to £100,000-a-week.

With Barcelona and Manchester City reportedly interested in the Spanish international full-back it was wise to tie him down for the long-term.

Now it’s time to focus on retaining another of our key players – Mesut Ozil. With his current contract expiring at the end of next season, questions have been asked about whether he will remain at the club.

The Telegraph believe that the two parties are close to agreeing on a new contract which would make the German playmaker the highest-paid player in the history of the club with a weekly wage of around £200,000-a-week.

Mesut Ozil signed a five-year, £140,000-a-week contract when he completed his £42.5m move from Real Madrid in 2013 but hasn’t put pen-to-paper on improved terms since.

Arsenal’s number one priority remains to sign both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez down to new contracts in the near future.
