Werder Bremen want to re-sign Mertesacker

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker seems to be edging closer to the exit door at the Emirates.

Shkodran Mustafi’s arrival from Valencia has made Mertesacker somewhat expendable, especially after his fellow German has settled into the Gunners’ back four with consummate ease.

The 32-year-old revealed earlier this week that he could leave Arsenal in the near future and that he is considering his future at the club.

With his contract up at the end of the season, Hannover have recently expressed an interest in bringing the World Cup winner back to Germany.

However, another German side have joined the race to sign Mertesacker, as Werder Bremen have confirmed their interest in signing the centre-back.

Arsenal signed Mertesacker from Bremen in the summer of 2011 and talks over his future came up during negotiations for Serge Gnabry’s transfer earlier this summer, sporting director and former teammate of Mertesacker’s, Frank Baumann told BILD.

“In the course of Serge’s transfer, we also talked about his future. I can see Per at Werder” Baumann said.

With Bremen being a Bundesliga side, and Mertesacker spending five years at the club earlier in his career, you’d think they stand a better chance of signing him than second-tier side Hannover.
