Arsenal have long been in the market for a centreback. The North London club have needed to strengthen the position badly but ever since injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista, the hunt has become even more urgent.

Reports broke last night that negotiations between Arsenal and Valencia defender, Shkodran Mustafi had hit a snag after the clubs could not agree on fee for the player. Valencia want in excess of £25 million for the player, which Wenger thinks is too high, thus Arsene Wenger has turned his attention to Portuguese international, Jose Fonte according to ESPN.
Fonte had a superb European Championships, which culminated in the Portugal winning the tournament. Moreover, the player has spent a long time at Southampton and is now 32-years-old, meaning this could be his one chance to move to a bigger club.

Arsenal will face competition, however, as Manchester United are also interested in a move for the player – who coincidentally shares the same agent as Mourinho.
Arsenal must bring in defensive cover, Fonte could well fill that void at the back.
