Jon Toral
Arguably the best loanee out of the bunch, Jon Toral is stuck between a rock and hard place.
While his performances have been outstanding for Birmingham, it is uncertain if the Spaniard can return to make a push for Arsenal’s first team. The pre-season will be key in showcasing his talents to Arsene Wenger, however Arsenal are already saturated with midfielders, especially if they dip into the transfer market this summer.
Another loan might be the best option.
Mathieu Debuchy
Debuchy did not play in Bordeaux’s final game of the season against Caen – they lost 1-0. The Frenchman went to France in order to establish himself in Didier Deschamp’s Euro squad, unfortunately, he picked up an injury which will cause him to miss the European Championships.
Due to Bellerin’s emergence, the starting right-back position is not Debuchy’s anymore, but the backup position is still up for grabs, if he excepts it.
Wellington Silva
Bought from Fluminese in 2011, Wellington Silva’s Arsenal career has never really taken off. Six loan spells on, and Silva’s Arsenal career seems like it will never materialize.
On loan at Bolton this season he has shown flashes but not enough to really impress. Towards the end of the season, a crippling injury practically ended his loan spell at Bolton.
Another loan spell would not be the best for the Brazilian winger. A transfer to a different club seems the best for all parties concerned.
Chuba Akpom
Chuba Akpom has had an indifferent season for Hull. While he has played over the 30 games for the club, following an outburst after being subbed off, Akpom’s game time was reduced.
The young forward did feature for Hull in their 3-0 first-leg win over Derby County at the weekend. He was also on the bench as Hull scraped through to the play-off final, losing 2-0 on Tuesday night, but winning on aggregate.
Many would argue that the England under-21 international was unlucky not to be used as Arsenal’s third choice striker this season. Next year, he will more than likely be given a chance in pre-season and could yet break into the first team next year.
Isaac Hayden
Unlike his Arsenal teammate, Hayden has struggled to play much for Steve Bruce’s side – and recently did not feature in either of Hull’s play-off semi-final legs.
The former Arsenal under-21 captain, has found it hard to register many games and will likely be loaned again next season. Due to his age, another loan move is not implausible. Arsenal have multiple options in midfield, thus it would be doubtful if we see Hayden playing for the first-team next season.
Wojciech Szczesny
Wojciech Szczesny, has had incredibly solid and consistent season for AS Roma. Having fallen out of favour and in need to gain experience, he was sent on loan to which many thought was the end of his career at Arsenal.
Much has spoken about Szczesny’s future recently. The player himself spoke about his eagerness to return to Arsenal, while also stating he his happy at Roma. Furthermore, reports have emerged that Arsenal want £15 million in order to make his loan move permanent.
Szczesny could still make a valuable contribution to Arsenal, but not as their number one goalkeeper.
Glen Kamara
After an unimpressive performance in the League Cup against Sheffield Wednesday, Kamara was destined to be loaned out in January. After the poor result against Sheffield Wednesday, Wenger accused his players of being ‘weak’ and ‘naive’.
Kamara is in the unfortunate position of trying to break through into an area where Arsenal have plenty of players. Furthermore, his place in the under-21 team could well have been lost. His Arsenal career looks bleak.
Gedion Zelalem
One of the more talented players amongst this batch. Zelalem had a good season.
The American midfielder, made 27 appearances (via transfermrkt) in all for Rangers over the year. The midfielder earnt rave reviews while playing in Scotland, and has already been earmarked to play in Arsenal’s first team next season. The 19-year-old American has had a good season, and is likely to play some part in the first team, or possibly go on loan.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles
One of the youngest players to be loaned this season (18), Maitland-Niles started this season off well, but finished it badly.
At the beginning of the season Maitland-Niles was getting regular matches for Ipswich, at the turn of the year, however his game time dropped dramatically. The young winger played seven League games in the second-half of the season, after having played 23 at the beginning of the season.
At such a young age, Maitland-Niles still has a lot of potential to fulill. Depending on his pre-season with the club, he could either remain to play for Arsenal or go out on loan again.
Emiliano Martinez
Having started a large majority of Wolves’ opening games, Martinez quickly fell out of favour at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Argentinian goalkeeper, sat on the bench from November until the end of the season. Although there could be an open spot as Arsenal’s number two ‘keeper, it seems doubtful that Martinez has the quality to fill that role.
Another loan or even a departure from the club seems likely.
Yaya Sanogo
Yaya Sanogo did not play the remainder of Charlton’s games towards the end of the season. All in all, this season has not been great for the Frenchman.
He registered eight appearances for Charlton Athletic in the Championship while also making three appearances for Ajax in the Eredivisie (via Transfermrkt). For a young player trying to breakthrough, that is not great.
At 23-years-old, he is entering the stage of his career where he needs constant minutes. Moreover, with Arsenal looking for a new striker, it would seem his time may be up at the club.
