# Debuchy unlikely to leave Arsenal for Sunderland this month

A move away from the Emirates is looking increasingly unlikely for out of favour Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy, after Sunderland revealed, [as reported by the *Telegraph*](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/sunderland/12127150/Sunderland-unsure-whether-Arsenal-will-let-Mathieu-Debuchy-leave-as-they-end-pursuit-of-Andre-Ayew.html), that they are unconvinced regarding their chances with the Frenchman this month.

The experienced defender has struggled to find his way into Arsene Wenger’s plans this season, due to a mixture of niggling injuries and the simply exceptional form of starting right-back Hector Bellerin.

Debuchy has played just five games all season and will be less than satisfied with his failure to secure first-team football throughout, as at 30 years of age, the France international will be hoping to make the most of his playing days.

The former Newcastle United man would have been searching for a move away this month in order to pursue his ambitions of playing for his native France in preparation for the summer’s European Championship, with the added incentive of playing for his country in front of his homeland.

It seems as though although a move this month is looking unlikely, a variety of clubs are still interested, with Italian giants Roma [taking an interest](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/sunderland/12127150/Sunderland-unsure-whether-Arsenal-will-let-Mathieu-Debuchy-leave-as-they-end-pursuit-of-Andre-Ayew.html) earlier on in January as well as Premier League strugglers Aston Villa.

Given Arsenal’s recent defensive form, it’s easy to say that Debuchy isn’t really needed within the squad, however, an experienced head such as the Frenchman’s at this stage of the season could prove to be invaluable.
