Arsenal to step up second bid for Leicester defender

Arsenal are set to launch a new and improved offer to Leicester City regarding promising left-back Ben Chilwell, after the starlet began to impress with Foxes’ first team, according to the Telegraph.

The Gunners have been long-term admirers of the young defender, seeing the potential in Chilwell since a young age and choosing to make a £3.5 million move for the Leicester youngster in the summer, however, their efforts to sign the 19-year-old were rebuffed.

However, six months on and Chilwell has caught the eye of many with impressive performances for Arsenal’s fellow title hopefuls Leicester since breaking into the first team mould, including what was regarded as an excellent performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday night, despite his side losing 2-0.

Despite Leicester’s insistence that Chilwell will not be sold to any club this month, nor in the foreseeable future, Arsenal have still identified that the promising Englishman is the ideal long-term replacement to current left-back Nacho Monreal, casting even more doubt over the future of fellow left-sided defender Kieran Gibbs, who has been benched on several occasions this season so far.

Arsenal may look to take advantage of Chilwell’s contract situation, due to the fact that he has just 18 months remaining at the King Power stadium, along with a fairly low wage of £2,500 a week; a pay packet that the Gunners could look to take advantage of in order to persuade the Foxes left-back to the Emirates.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea are all said to be interested in Chilwell.
