CONFIRMED: Monreal signs contract extension

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has signed a new contract, the club have officially confirmed.

The new deal will keep him with tahe Gunners until 2019 and it’s believed he has received a pay rise for his impressive performances over the last 18 months.

The Spaniard has been arguably Arsenal’s most consistent and reliable player this season, featuring in all 22 games, starting 21 of them.

Having initially struggled when he joined the club in the early stages of his tenure, many believed he would be insufficient in keeping performances up to a high level and would act solely as back-up to Kieran Gibbs.

However, with the Englishman’s poor level of consistency and Monreal’s sturdiness defensively, amid a stint at central defence, the 29-year-old become the clear no.1 on the left flank of the Arsenal defence.

Alongside Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Hector Bellerin, the familiar back four of Arsenal have kept 10 clean sheets in 22 league games this campaign.
