Former Arsenal striker and current Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith believes that his former side do not need to add any other players this transfer window to see them win their first Barclays Premier League title in over a decade.
Arsene Wenger recently signed Egyptian international Mohamed Elneny from Basel in Switzerland for a fee of £5m to bolster his midfield. Despite the calls from Arsenal supporters to see another new face at their club, Smith claimed on Sky Sports News HQ that the Gunners don’t need to buy anybody else.
Stars like Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck who are all set to return from injury soon, will be the key to the Gunners’ title bid, according to Smith.
Danny Welbeck is apparently only three weeks away and that will help them if he comes back in the kind of form he is capable of.
Any manager would love to get in a world-class player to give the dressing room a lift, but it’s so difficult and I don’t think it’s going to happen.
I think they’ve got enough. They didn’t have Ozil or Sanchez at Stoke and they were able to cope with that, and they’re due back soon so they’re not far off full strength.
Building on this, Smith argues that the main reason why the Gunners have been performing so well this season is not thanks to any new faces, but it’s new found resilience.
I think those are two good draws at Liverpool and Stoke. I know they could have won it easily at Anfield but in years gone by, they would have lost that game at Stoke.
They didn’t used to be able to grind out those draws and wins in the difficult games.
When they’re not at the top of the game and not playing that lovely football that we’re used to, they can get results. That’s the stuff of champions and you’ve got to have that if you’re going to win the league. That resilience will please Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners are currently at the top of the Barclays Premier League table but are only one point ahead of title rivals Manchester City. If they have hopes of claiming the league title then they will need to continue showing their new-found resolve so as to stay one step ahead of their rivals.
