Arsenal to rival Liverpool for Athletic forward Williams

Arsenal are set to rival Liverpool for the signature of Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams, according to reports via the Daily Mail.

The Spanish under-21 became the club’s first ever black player to score in their 117-year history, scoring against Torino almost a year ago.

It’s believed that both Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp’s side sent scouts to watch Williams last week as he scored the only goal against Villarreal and are interested in acquiring his services.

Williams current has a release clause of £15.3m, although after such an impressive start to the campaign, Bilbao are looking to raise it to around £76m – a number not many clubs will be able to afford.

It’s unlikely the Gunners will firm up their interest this month, with Arsene Wenger revealing he is not interested in signing a striker – instead is looking forward to the return of Danny Welbeck.

Ideally, personally I would prefer to have the players back from injuries, like Welbeck for example, who has been out since April last year. I’m confident that I won’t find a better player than Welbeck on the market today. If you give me the choice, I would prefer to have all my injured players back and go into the end of the season with everybody available.

Arsenal have made just one signing thus far this month, bringing in central midfielder Mohamed Elneny.
