Warburton explains Zelalem loan extension

Glasgow Rangers have confirmed that they have extended the loan of young midfielder Gedion Zelalem.

The Arsenal man has made 15 appearances for Rangers so far this season, and has gained plaudits for his efforts.

He was recently hit by injury which kept him out for a prolonged period. However, Zelalem is now back in the Rangers team, being on the bench for Saturdays 6-0 thrashing of Dumbarton.

The young American midfielder has previously played in the UEFA Champions League, making only one appearance, that being as a substitute in Arsenal’s 4-1 away win to Galatasaray in December 2014. That was his only appearance for the Gunners.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton explained his thoughts on Zelalem’s future to the club’s official website.

Gedion is a really talented young player who is just eighteen years of age. You just need to look at his achievements as a young player and where he is today.

He moved to a club of Arsenal’s stature and played in the Champions League away at Galatasaraay at 16 or 17 years of age and then came here, moving to Glasgow and dealing with the expectation is magnificent.

I can’t speak high enough of Gedion, I think he will go on to play at the very highest level of the game.

The 18-year-old is expected to travel with the USA squad when they go to the Olympic Games in Rio later on this year. He has played for the Germany under-15, under-16 and under-17 squads, but changed nationalities to American, and has played for both the United States under-20 and under-23 national teams, making a total of 20 appearances for both countries.
