The transfer window is just seven days old, yet Arsenal seem to be close to completing the signing of Basel midfielder, Mohamad Elneny.

The fee for Elneny is believed to be around £7 million and would be a fairly inexpensive signing. The Egyptian international missed training on Monday to complete the deal after having completed his medical. Due to the reported fee, some argue that this is not the signing Arsenal should be pursuing.

Paul Merson admitted his disappointment that Arsenal have not gone after a big name signing.

I thought they would go for a real key signing, Someone for £30m-odd.

I don’t think he’ll go straight in the team, instead he’ll be a squad player for the games coming up. It depends how quickly he settles, though.

Although he is not a big name, Elneny will go some way into bolstering Arsenal’s midfield, especially in light of the injuries to Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla. Considering the injuries, it is possible that Elneny will make an instant impact on the squad.

The midfielder will certainly add depth to the midfield, and could add quality to Arsenal’s squad. The fee might be cheap now, but it could well look like a bargain if he can help the Gunners lift their first Premier League title since 2003/04.
