Arsenal’s lucky charm and go-to yellow card, Mathieu Flamini, has been shortlisted as one of NME’s ‘People of the Year’.
It looks somewhat of a tongue-in-cheek list, with Skepta, Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj among the rest of the candidates. The rather sceptical choices in the rest of that shortlist mean that Flamini, who has never lost a game at the Emirates as an Arsenal player, is probably the pick of the bunch to scoop the prize – if the award is to be taken seriously.

NME’s reasoning for nominating the French midfielder is a serious one, however.
Modern footballers might be hideously overpaid, but at least Mathieu Flamini is investing his millions to try and save the world.
Flamini is the co-founder of an environmentally friendly energy company, GF Biochemicals. He has invested millions of his own money in an attempt to get eco-friendly fuel into the commercial energy market.
The alternative fuel he produces is now at a stage where it can be used as a substitute for crude oil – or perhaps Mathieu drinks it to keep his youth. If so, he may be supplying it to the entire squad to help them to their first Premier League title since 2005.
