Chambers – I enjoyed midfield cameo

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has claimed that playing in midfield is something he has begun to enjoy, despite being new to the role.

The 20-year-old was signed from Southampton as a right-back but has been deployed in a number of positions, including central defender and now, with the likes of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla out injured, is expected to feature more regularly as a defensive midfielder.

Despite the likes of Mathieu Flamini featuring in the deep role for the Gunners, Chambers has had a couple of substitute appearances to come on and join the midfield, with the ex-Saint admitting to Arsenal Player that he is enjoying the learning curve.

It was really enjoyable.

In games like that it’s great for me to get on, it adds to my experience so I’m really enjoying it.

Every time I get to go on in central midfield it’s good for me and it adds things to my game as well. I’m just taking every opportunity I get and learning from the experiences.

Compared to centre back, I think you need to be more aware of everyone around you.

You’ve got to be swivelling your head, looking where everyone is and knowing where you’re going to pass the ball before you get it.

It’s almost like you need to be one step ahead of the game.

Chambers could once again be utilised from the bench, with Flamini likely to partner Aaron Ramsey once again.

Arsenal face Aston Villa at Villa Park this Sunday, where a win will take them to the top of the Barclays Premier League, ahead of current table-toppers Leicester City.
