Carlos Vela is only 26-years old but has already had his share of transfer sagas. Initially acquired by Arsenal in January of 2006 from Guadalajara in the Mexican league, work permit issues kept him from appearing for the Gunners until the 2008/09 season, when he made 29 appearances in all competitions.
In between his initial acquisition and his debut for Arsenal, Vela spent loan spells at Celta Vigo, Salamanca, and Osasuna. The Gunners also loaned Vela out in 2011 to West Bromwich Albion before loaning him to Real Sociedad before the 2011/12 season. The parties made the move permanent in August of 2012 for a transfer fee of nearly £10m. Many Arsenal supporters thought this was a boon for the club given the player’s non-impact in the first team during his time in North London.
It seems, however, that the Gunners may still see additional benefit from Vela as he inches toward a possible move to MLS in the United States. According to the International Business Times, Arsenal would receive 20% of any transfer fee that Sociedad receive from a sale of Vela. With a current buyout clause of £22m, Arsenal could receive more than £4m from a sale.

Both Vela’s agent and MLS officials have confirmed that the 26-year old is exploring his options with regards to a move to America. According to Vela’s agent Eduardo Hernández, it could happen.
Carlos has been playing in Europe for 10 years, far from his family and that is why MLS is an alternative. We are of the thought that no doors should be closed. We do not want to limit Carlos’ options and that is why we are listening. It could happen in January or in one or two years’ time.
Of the MLS clubs showing interest, the favourite to land Vela seems to be the Colorado Rapids. Rapids sporting director Claudio Piojo López confirmed negotiations.
We are negotiating with Vela and Real Sociedad.
It is ultimately difficult to say whether or not Real Sociedad will be able to part with Vela during the season, as they are currently flirting with relegation in La Liga, and such a sale may indicate something of a surrender which may not sit well with supporters.
At the same time, Vela has not performed well in his time with the Spanish club, and they may be eager to realise as much value as possible from the Mexican before he plummets further with additional lacklustre performances.
