Arsenal legend Ian Wright has claimed that his former side have no choice but to sign a top midfielder in the January transfer window.
Calls had been made for Arsene Wenger to recruit a defensive midfielder for some time and with the news that Francis Coquelin will be facing ‘at least two months’ of football, the argument has gained further strength.
The Frenchman went down injured against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon and it was revealed that he damaged ligaments in his knee, leaving Arsenal’s defensive midfield options as Calum Chambers and Mathieu Flamini.

Arsenal have had links with the likes of William Carvalho and Morgan Schneiderlin for some time now but with the Frenchman signing for Manchester United in the summer and the Sporting Lisbon midfielder staying at the club during the summer and previously indicating his delight at doing so, Wenger may have to look elsewhere.
Wright, however, believes that if Wenger is serious about his ambitions with the club, he must put his hand in his pocket and splash the cash in January.

When Francis Coquelin broke down… you could hear the groans from Gunners fans around the world. That’s how important the Frenchman has been.
Something needs to be done in January. [Arsenal need] someone who will genuinely bring something to the table, rather than simply fill in around the edges.
January is [Wenger’s] most important transfer window in years and years. If he can bring in the right man – or men – it could make a world of difference to whether Arsenal can go all the way.
