Former England and Liverpool goalkeeper David James has spoken out about Arsenal’s title chances. Despite their impressive start to their Barclays Premier League campaign, the 45-year-old claims that the side needs to add more players to their side to build on the work Petr Cech has been doing.
David James, who made nearly 900 appearances for club and country during his career, believes that although the signing of experienced ‘keeper Petr Cech from bitter rivals Chelsea in the summer was a step in the right direction, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needed to alter the defence in front of Cech to help prevent more goals being conceded.
I like Cech, I think he is an amazing goalkeeper, there’s quotes by me suggesting I said otherwise but that’s never the case.
The point of Arsene getting Petr Cech wasn’t Cech isn’t good, or better than Ospina, because he is in every department, however Arsenal’s problem wasn’t fundamentally the goalkeeper.
I think they conceded 36 last year, their best before that was the Invincibles in 2004. They also concede the greatest number of headers, so there’s something in front of the goalkeeper which isn’t quite right.

The former England shot-stopper went on to suggest that the number of outstanding performances that Cech has already put in for the Gunners highlights the lack of defensive solidarity in front of him and, as a result, argues that Arsenal cannot, at present, win the league with the squad they have.
The fact Cech has had to produce a number of outstanding performances already this season, kind of suggests there’s still problems going on in front of him. No (he can’t make the difference to Arsenal winning the league).
Arsenal currently sit second in the Barclays Premier League, joint on points with league leaders Manchester City and only behind them on goal difference. Cech has produced a string of outstanding performances for the Gunners and may well be responsible for some of their victories so far this season. Wenger could possibly look at the success that Cech has brought to the side and choose to purchase another player or two in the upcoming transfer window.
