Giroud – We wanted to pay tribute to the people of Paris

Arsenal and France international Olivier Giroud has admitted his disappointment at his nation’s performance, after they came out 2-0 losers to England at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

A wonder strike from Dele Alli, followed by a well-placed by Wayne Rooney meant that England were victorious against the French and after the game, Giroud admitted he couldn’t help but feel disappointed at the performance put in by the travellers.

We are very disappointed that we didn’t play well.

Despite the circumstances we had to represent our country the best we could. We were proud to have that opportunity tonight.

We faced an efficient English side. We struggled against them. It was not really ‘us’ tonight.

As soon as we decide to play the game, we are all professional football players and even if it is everything but easy, we must deliver on the pitch.

As soon as the referee whistled, we should have straight away got into the game. We couldn’t do it.

Prior to kick-off, all 72,000 spectators united to sing the French national anthem – a rendition of La Marseillaise which came after terrorist attacks in Paris last week killed a reported 129 people, however, Giroud admitted that he and his teammates had no doubt about whether to play the game or not, claiming the players wanted to pay tribute to the people of Paris.

We wanted to play that game for all these people who stayed in France. We wanted to pay tribute to the victims’ families.

Giroud returns to duty with his club side, Arsenal, this weekend, when the Gunners take on West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.
