Arsenal great and perhaps arguably the most important Brazilian in the clubs history, Gilberto Silva, has hailed his compatriot Gabriel for his level of performance since joining the Gunners.
Gabriel signed for the north London side in January for little over £11m and has since impressed when called upon but has had a slow berth into the first XI due to the rock solid partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the heart of the defence.
The former Invincible discussed the 24-year-olds altercation with Chelsea forward Diego Costa in the game at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. An incident which saw the Arsenal defender sent off for his involvement.

Gabriel was innocent with Diego Costa.
If the players want to argue they will, but Costa is quite experienced. He knew what he was doing.
Something was said but Gabriel paid for his innocence.
I didn’t like the way Costa reacted there. They’re both Brazilian, they should show respect to each other. When you don’t it’s bad for the teams and bad for football. He must think about what it means for the game.
Despite having impressed for the Gunners thus far because of his commitment, pace and reading of the game, Gilberto admitted Gabriel must be patient if he is to have a long and fruitful career in north London.

It’s nice to see another Brazilian at Arsenal.
He stepped up and he’s made his case well.
When I’ve seen him play he has done well, but he still needs time to adapt. He needs to be patient and learn from Arsene if he wants to be a first-choice. But he’s a good player and he will go far.

Gabriel will return to action when Arsenal take on West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns next Saturday.
