Danny Welbeck has been out with a knee injury that has been a little puzzling to Arsenal fans at times. Originally suffering the injury in April, Welbeck initially was optimistic to return by the end of the 2014/15 season. However, a setback was followed by knee surgery, and the forward has yet to see any action since. Welbeck recently spoke with Arsenal Player about his progress, the mental difficulties of a long-term injury, and his impressions of this year’s squad gleaned by watching from the stands.
On his rehabilitation progress, the England man admitted he’s faced difficulties.
It’s slow and steady but it’s coming along. It’s difficult to see the lads when you’re still in the gym, doing double days, but once I get back out on the pitch and start running I will be much happier. It’s a difficult period for me but I’m looking forward to coming back strong.
I want to get back out on the pitch, keep on improving, keep training and keep fit – that’s the main thing. I just want to get back to playing football.
Though the above comments seem to indicate that Welbeck may not be recovered enough to begin a running programme, which would be an obvious first step to thinking about a realistic timetable for his return, but he has been training and working on other areas.
I’m trying to build to muscle and it’s hard, but it’s something that I’ve grasped with two hands and I’m really looking forward to my return.

Welbeck also spoke about his view of the team from above. Watching from high up, he notes, gives him a different perspective and a different appreciation for his teammates and the game itself.
I’ve been impressed. I trained with them every single day when I was fit and you obviously appreciate every single player in their own ways.
But when you watch the game from afar, and you know how difficult it is, some of the passes and vision, the play and goals, is really impressive.
If all goes well, Welbeck should return shortly after the New Year. According to Physio Room, he is expected back on or near 16th January. His status may affect any winter transfer plans Arsène Wenger may have. If he is able to recover during the month and contribute, it may allow the club to focus on other areas they may wish to improve.
