Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has claimed that the Gunners are now a stronger unit and that the team’s unity has aided their excellent start to the season so far.
The Spanish full-back has helped Arsene Wenger’s men to second in the league this season, level with Manchester City on points and behind on only goal difference, as well as boasting the second best defensive record so far this campaign.
Despite his happiness with the way his team have approached the matches this season and have enjoyed a good start to this campaign, Monreal has warned his teammates that they must not get complacent and that consistency in the key, bringing up last season’s disappointing second half.
We need to learn from that. I remember it very well because we finished the first half of the season [near the top]. In the second half, we lost a lot of games so we need to learn about that. I think the team is different now. We have different players, and are more competitive.
I think the level of the team is better now and I hope we can do something special this season. At the moment, everything is right so we need to carry on.
The 29-year-old left-back revealed that the secret to Arsenal’s success this season has been mainly down to the team spirit and attitude that Arsene Wenger has helped to implement in this campaign, which he has reaped the rewards from as his team continue to play attractive football with impressive and convincing results.
The secret? I will say that we are playing more compact, like a unit. The players are playing with more solidarity, all players try to defend. I think this is the [reason for] that.
We have won the Community Shield, we are second in the Premier League with the same points as Manchester City.
Monreal has featured 12 times for Arsenal this season and has been an impressive figure in the side when he has been called upon.
