Arsenal legend Ian Wright has said that the club do not need to replace current defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin, but must sign a back up.
Wright is evidently impressed with the Frenchman’s current form, who has cemented his place in Arsenal’s first team. The Gunners have been in desperate need of a defensive minded midfielder for years, and Coquelin’s performances have established him as the man to fill that void.
Many have voiced their concerns that Coquelin, 24, isn’t the long-term answer to Arsene Wenger’s midfield, however Wright believes otherwise, and whilst speaking for BreatheSport via Twitter, he said Arsenal mustn’t replace the midfielder.
Given time, Francis is going to be the defensive midfielder Arsenal are going to spend £30m or £40m on.
People are talking about Arsenal needing a defensive midfielder; now I think they should be looking to get a defensive midfielder to back him up, not replace him.

Club captain Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are the current backup options manager Arsene Wenger has at his disposal, but when selected, neither have the same impact that Coquelin does. In recent seasons, Arsenal have been criticised for their defensive capabilities, however, have vastly improved this side of their game, and Coquelin has had a major influence.
His defensive mindset has allowed the clubs more attacking talents to flourish knowing he can be relied upon in the middle of the park, and his passion, determination, and absolute commitment to the cause has propelled Coquelin as a fan favourite amongst the Arsenal faithful.
Should the Gunners challenge for any trophy this season, there’s no doubt Coquelin’s name will be mentioned as to why the club were so successful.
