Do Arsenal still have a striker problem?

You wouldn’t think that Arsenal would still have a striker problem. Sitting top of the table alongside Manchester City on goal difference, the Gunners have scored the fourth-most goals in the league, trailing behind Manchester City, West Ham and Leicester City. So surely there’s nothing wrong with the club’s forwards?

Who are the men in question?

Olivier Giroud

The big question has always been about this man. Is he good enough? Giroud joined Arsenal in 2012 for roughly £9m. He’s played 107 games since then and scored 46 goals, an OK return. Some people seem to favour him and some don’t. Giroud has played 10 games this season and scored five goals – again, a decent return. For a team with bigger ambitions and looking to win the league, it’s sadly not enough.

Theo Walcott

He isn’t an out-and-out striker, however, he’s led the line for Arsenal a fair few times over the last couple of seasons. Theo Walcott has played eight games for the Gunners this campaign and scored four goals. An unspectacular return.

Can Arsenal win the league without signing a forward?

The short answer – no. Arsenal have the quality necessary all over the pitch to push them towards winning the league, however, they need the cutting edge striker to help them over the line. Someone like Thierry Henry, a one in a million forward who can create something out of nothing or score tap-ins, to be in the right place at the right time. The north London side could survive until January with Giroud and Walcott but if they want to be serious about winning the league, they must invest in the transfer window.
