Gunners on duty: International round-up

International breaks are tough for every fan of club football, but when players from your club do well during the break, it gives supporters a bit of consolation for a weekend’s worth of lost matches. Here,we’ll take a look at at how Arsenal players got on during their matches for their respective countries.

Alex Iwobi, Nigeria

The young Gunner made his Nigeria debut off the bench in a 2-0 loss to DR Congo on Thursday, October 8th, after being subbed on in the 57th minute. He also was used as a substitute in the team’s 3-0 win over a very solid Cameroon side, where he was brought on for his second cap in the 79th minute.

Joel Campbell, Costa Rica

Campbell played the entire match in a 1-0 loss to South Africa. He and the Costa Rican national side take on the United States on Tuesday, October 13th.

David Ospina, Colombia

Ospina kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win for Colombia over Peru in a World Cup qualifying match. His Colombian side take on a high-octane Uruguay side on Tuesday.

Wojciech Szczesny, Poland

Szczesny was an unused sub in Poland’s two matches, a 2-2 draw with Scotland and a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland.

Petr Cech, Czech Republic

The Czech Republic lost their first match 2-0 to Turkey and Cech was an unused substitute. Their next match is Tuesday against the Netherlands.

Aaron Ramsey, Wales

Wales lost 2-0 in their first match of the Euro qualifiers to Bosnia & Herzegovina, but they still qualified for the tournament for the first time in 57 years. Ramsey played the full 90, and Wales plays again on Tuesday against Andorra.

Mesut Özil, Germany

Germany lost 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland in their first match, but on Sunday they bounced back to beat Georgia 2-1. Özil got the winning assist as he found Max Kruse late for a goal to win the match and prevent another upset and loss for the World Cup winners.

Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs, England

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored during Monday’s match against Lithuania, which ended 3-0 and capped off England’s perfect Euro qualifying campaign. Theo Walcott also netted in England’s first match of the break against Estonia, which ended 2-0 and Oxlade-Chamberlain played the final 17 minutes. Kieran Gibbs played the full 90 in England’s game against Lithuania.

Olivier Giroud, France

Giroud scored both goals and may have regained his prolific form in France’s 2-1 victory over Denmark on Sunday. He also played the last nine minutes of Les Bleus’ win against Armenia, which ended 4-0.

Alexis Sanchez, Chile

Alexis scored late on in a World Cup qualifying match against Brazil to make it 2-0 and seal the win for the Chileans. He and Chile play Tuesday against Peru.

Santi Cazorla, Spain

The little maestro played the full 90 against Luxembourg and scored two times in that match that ended 4-0 to Spain. He also was subbed on in the 74th minute against Ukraine in a 1-0 match on Monday.
