Wenger – Quick start important in UEFA Champions League

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that for the north London side to do well in the UEFA Champions league this season, they must get off to a quick start.

The Gunners travel to Croatia to face Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday evening, a fixture which gets the European campaign underway and if they want to return to the Emirates with all three points, Wenger believes Arsenal must be at their very best.

It is important we go to Zagreb highly focused and conscious at what is at stake there. You can be quickly out of the Champions League and we want to start well and we know we have a battle first to qualify with Bayern Munich [in the group].

The Gunners boss went on to highlight the importance of finding balance in the early stages.

You need to find the balance between urgency and confidence and at times that is difficult as you can quickly be too confident and lose your urgency.

We have Olympiacos and Zagreb first and we have to finish above them and the result will come down to that. I think it is important to start well because the hunger of a team is shown as well in how well you go in every competition.

Arsene Wenger’s side were disappointing in last season’s UEFA Champions League campaign, failing to finish top of the group and were knocked out by French giants Monaco in the round of 16 – a double legged affair that the side from north London were expected to win.

If Arsenal are to get their European adventure off to a good start, they must be at their best when they face Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday evening, with kick-off taking place at 19:45 BST.
