# Debuchy – Leaving has crossed my mind

Since joining Arsenal in the summer of 2014, Mathieu Debuchy has had an injury-struck, rather torrid time – to say the least.

[The Frenchman could make just 15 appearances in his debut season](https://www.arsenal.com/first-team/players/mathieu-debuchy), starting out extremely impressively and many had thought that the natural successor to long-serving full-back Bacary Sagna had been bought in like-for-like circumstances, but so far, Debuchy has had little chance to show his talents, which he clearly possesses in abundance.

Due to the 30-year-old’s constant injuries, Arsenal were forced to bring in Calum Chambers early on, who showed his promise and talent – but also proved to Arsene Wenger that he is built to be a central defender, rather than a player on the right side of the defence.

Chambers is a tall, good defender, who lacks pace, which is key for a modern-day, attacking full-back. Perhaps the youngster was also burnt out, after having never played a full season of football. [T](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calum_Chambers)[he 20-year-old had made a total of 36 appearances in his first full campaign with the](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calum_Chambers)club and the majority of them came before Christmas.

As Hector Bellerin emerged into the side, first being used against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League, a life lesson for the Spaniard – he gained confidence in abundance and proved that he could stand the test of Premier League football, going on to fill in at right-back, solidifying his place in the side.

With Mathieu Debuchy back to full fitness, he started the first game of the Premier League season against West Ham but is since yet to appear and the Frenchman [admitted to *L’Equipe*](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2892/transfer-zone/2015/09/04/15034732/debuchy-bellerins-form-forced-me-to-consider-arsenal-future) that he has had thoughts about leaving the club, due to Bellerin being selected in the Community Shield over him.
