Gunners midfielder Santi Cazorla has implored his teammates to show more consistency, in the hope of mounting a title challenge. The Spanish maestro told Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday: “We want to be more consistent in every game sometimes we can lose, like the first game, always football is surprising, like Chelsea’s first game against Swansea.
“We need to be more patient with the ball, side to side, and then play quick.
“We have to defend together because sometimes for other teams it is easy to play against us, because they have space to counter attack and this is difficult for us – we need to improve this part.
“It is a long season and of course Man United, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, they are very good teams, and Arsenal of course also.
“We want to improve this year and fight with them and of course we can win the league.”
Cazorla admits that Arsenal’s abysmal opening to last season meant they could never actually challenge for the league, despite the excellent run of form they produced in the second half of the season. He goes on to say this cannot happen again if the Gunners want to seriously challenge for the title: “We lost so many points and after it was difficult to fight with Chelsea and Man City for the title and this year we want to start better than last year.”
The Spaniard also showed his support for summer signing Petr Cech, who has found himself under fire after two unconvincing games for the Gunners in the Premier League. He said on Cech’s performance against West Ham: “His mentality had changed so quick, after the game he came into the dressing room saying ‘come on, don’t worry, next game we need to win’.
“It is experience and confidence and I think will he will be a very important player for us.”
