Newcastle United’s latest signing, Florian Thauvin, has revealed that Arsenal once approached him with the intention of bringing him to the Premier League in their own colours.
The French midfielder, who Newcastle have signed at the expense of Remy Cabella, who went to Marseille in a swap deal, spoke out about previous Premier League interest in him.
He claims that the only Premier League club besides Newcastle who have previously approached him for his services are the Gunners: “Two or three seasons ago, Arsene Wenger perhaps made an approach with Arsenal.
“But apart from Arsenal, Newcastle are the only other club who have made an approach for me in the past”.
Newcastle paid £12 million plus Remy Cabella on loan for 22-year-old Thauvin, who scored five goals and made four assists in Ligue 1 last season, in 32 starts for Marseille.
It is hard to see how Thauvin would fit in at Arsenal with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey all key in attacking areas of the midfield at the Emirates, but perhaps that would have been a different story had Wenger snapped Florian up “two or three seasons ago”.
