Arsenal could be set for a club record transfer, as they prepare to make a £45 million bid to prise Karim Benzema away from Real Madrid.
Arsene Wenger has been given approval from the board to make the huge offer for the French international striker, according to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, who suggests that Benzema would also demand to become the highest-paid player at the club.
Mesut Ozil currently holds the distinction of the Gunners’ most expensive player, both in terms of being their record signing (£42 million) and their highest earner (£150,000 per week) – but both of those could be about to tumble.
The manager is understood to see Benzema as potentially the difference-maker who could bring the Premier League trophy to the Emirates Stadium. Despite their huge array of attacking talent, Real are understood to be very reluctant to sell Benzema, and may seek to sign a replacement first, with Sergio Aguero understood to be their top target but unlikely to be sold by Manchester City.
