Star of Arsenal’s triumphant victory, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has expressed his desire to keep on scoring goals, after bagging himself the winner early on against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in a 1-0 victory.
The win means that the Gunners have retained the Community Shield, having won it last season against Manchester City in a 3-0 victory. Goals have been few and far between for the England international since he joined Arsenal in 2011, who has now scored only 13 goals.
When asked about his fine left-footed strike today, the Ox claimed: “I don’t know about ‘wondergoal’ but it was really nice to see that one go in.
“I got a goal in the Emirates Cup, and it’s what I need to do this year, there’s no doubting that and I’m not afraid to say that I need to score more goals.
“I’ve set myself that target this year on a personal level so every time I’m on the pitch it’s important that I try and contribute in some way and a goal or an assist is what I need to do. It was really nice to [score on Sunday] and as it’s the winner it’s that little bit more special.”
After admitting to his joy on a personal level, the 21-year-old went on to compliment the team’s performance as a unit, claiming that the defence in particular put in a solid effort, reducing the Premier League champions to very few opportunities in front of goal.
“All-round we played really well,” added Oxlade-Chamberlain. “We didn’t play our best stuff with the ball, I think Chelsea deserve credit for that, they are a great defensive side, and they stopped us from playing at time.
“But we did enough, we defended really well as a team and kept them to minimal chances. That’s really positive going into the season because in the big games that’s what it comes down to sometimes.
“I have absolute faith and confidence in this team and I think that can be shared throughout the squad. As a group of players we’ve been together for a good number of years, so there’s a real team spirit and sense of togetherness.”
Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign at home to West Ham United next Sunday, with the hope of finally being able to put in a significant challenge to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
