Cesc Fabregas has spoken out over the reception he expects to receive from the Arsenal fans in the upcoming Community Shield match at Wembley this Sunday. Steve Brenner, reporting for The Guardian claims that the former Arsenal captain who scored 57 goals in 303 appearances is under no illusions that a hostile reception awaits him, but still feels the same passion for his parent club that he did back when he still played for the Gunners.
“Whatever it is, it is. The love I have for that club will never change whatever happens and what is the most important is what I have with me are the memories…The rest doesn’t matter. I have great memories, love and respect for the club. You will never hear anything bad from me about them.”
The Spanish playmaker claims that although the Community Shield game is not the most important game of the season he is still focused on giving his all to win the game and acknowledges the importance of any London derby.
“Of course, it is not the most important game but we want to win and compete. It is a big game, a London derby at Wembley in front of all the fans – it’s a nice competition to play in. Even if it is a pre-season game you still want to win. We are not worried that they might be fresher than us – they started 10 days before us – but we are competitors, we will want to win and it will probably be a great game.”
Amid Jose Mourinho’s claims that Chelsea’s rivals, including Arsenal, are attempting to buy the league, Fabregas argues that every team does it and instead of focusing on the negative aspect that money brings to football he is looking forward to the challenge it presents as rival teams grow stronger.
“[Manchester] United already spent last year, Arsenal last year too. We spend, [Manchester] City maybe less, then now they spend again,” added Fàbregas. “They all want to compete and it will be for sure very difficult to retain the Premier League. There are four or five teams who can win it. We will see what happens but we know we will have to fight again.”
However, at present neither Chelsea nor Arsenal have made significant changes to their squad in terms of numbers and so the teams that set foot on the pitch at Wembley should be familiar to both sets of fans.
