Chambers is going nowhere

According to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, Calum Chambers will definitely not be leaving the club this summer. The 20-year-old defender has been linked with a loan-move back to Ronald Koeman’s Southampton, but the Frenchman has quashed any potential speculation and has admitted he is keen on using Chambers in the upcoming campaign.

Chambers made 36 appearances for the Gunners last season in his first campaign at the club, which was regarded as a success, but began to struggle against the likes of Stoke City and Swansea due to his lack of pace, and Wenger wants to develop the youngster into a central defender.

“I want to develop [Chambers] as a centre back and at the moment we have just the right number. He will get games here,” Wenger claimed.

20-year-old Chambers has been used in pre-season in the middle of the park and it looks certain that his future will remain there, as opposed to on the right side.

Despite reports in The Independent this morning, Wenger went on to claim that Arsenal had not received nor rejected a bid for the England international.

“They [Southampton] didn’t try to get him back on loan and I will not consider it. Not at the moment.”

Wenger also went on to state that if the right player comes up, he would be interested in strengthening the squad: “I don’t rule it out and I don’t promise it,” he said. “As I said recently in the press conferences, if we can still strengthen, we will do it.

“We spend when we think we have to spend and do not listen too much to what people think or say. We just try to make the right decisions.”

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a number of top class talent recently, including Karim Benzema and most recently Sergio Busquets.
