Transfer season is a game of chess

There have been constant links with Arsenal and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. Some saying all that needs to be done is the fee to be agreed between the two clubs, others are commenting that Madrid are trying to buy a player before sanctioning the move. This could well be true as both Ivan Gazidis and Arsene Wenger have stated in the past that sometimes a player coming in is dependent on the selling club finding a suitable replacement. With Benzema being the main target the press are talking about, I look at another striker Wenger has gone on record as saying is a player he admires.

Now, with the Benzema rumours there has been talk that Marco Reus is a target for Real Madrid and if they land their man it will enable Cristiano Ronaldo a chance up front allowing Benzema the freedom to find a new club, hence the Arsenal talk. If we put the same logic behind another deal being talked about in the press it might free up a certain Uruguayan striker to find a new club; that player is Edinson Cavani.

Angel Di Maria has been continually linked with a summer move to PSG after serving only one year of his long-term contract at Manchester United. The Argentine has struggled at his new club and a move looks certain as he refused to join his teammates on their pre-season trip to the USA. If he signs for PSG that would be another winger to compete for a spot in the team. Cavani as we know is a striker but due to the form of main man Zlatan Imbrahimovic, the 28-year-old has regularly been deployed on the wings, much to his dismay.

If Arsenal were truly interested in the Uruguay striker and Di Maria does in fact complete his move to the French champions then the Emirates is a very attractive proposition for the striker. Arsenal are in need of a commanding forward and they don’t come much better than Cavani.
