As Arsenal cruised to a 6-0 victory against Lyon, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain spoke to Arsenal Player after the game, and said: “Once we got the first goal, we took off the handbrake and really started going for it”.
This was evident as Arsenal fired in four goals in just nine minutes. As well as Oxlade-Chamberlain, Olivier Giroud, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey all scored in quick succession. It took Arsenal a little longer to find the fifth and sixth as Mesut Ozil scored a well placed half-volley after 60 minutes and then second half substitute Santi Cazorla scored a low, well thought out free-kick late in the game.
The 6-0 victory would come as a surprise to many as Lyon, who finished runners up to PSG in Ligue 1 last year, and are a very good side who will play in the UEFA Champions League this coming year. The Ox discussed the fact that Arsenal had to bide their time and wait for the opening in order to score: “It took us a little while to get going. Lyon are a good side and they pass the ball well”.
The 21-year-old also spoke about how this could help Arsenal gain momentum for upcoming matches, most notably the Community Shield match against Chelsea next Sunday.
“It was an important match for us and the fans looking forward to the start of the season. The Community Shield is going to be a big one for us”. This suggests that the Ox is raring to go and knows what it means to the fans to beat Chelsea, regardless of the occasion, although some may say the Community Shield could be considered a major trophy.
Also speaking to Arsenal Player was Aaron Ramsey, another goal scorer on the day. He believes Arsenal’s 100% win rate in pre-season should help them kick off the season well against West Ham in just a couple of weeks time. He explained: “It’s going to be important for us to start the season well”.
Whether pre-season will have a positive effect on the start of the season or not is yet to be seen but many can only hope that this year Arsenal will start the new campaign well and finally push to the end for the Barclays Premier League.
