Arsene Wenger has become a legend for Arsenal after reigniting the passion for football within the club. Prior to his arrival, the club had been labeled “boring boring Arsenal” with the chant “1-0 to the Arsenal” commonly sung at most games. However, his arrival from Nagoya Grampus in 1996 sparked a new era for Arsenal; one where they would be known across the globe for their intricate passing and their unbeatable possession game.
The upcoming Premier League season looks very hopeful for the Gunners with Petr Cech now between the sticks and Shad Forsythe working his magic on the squad. The team is looking very much capable of a title challenge and fans can only hope that they will be treated to high scoring games, although if you look back then you will notice that under Wenger, Arsenal have been known to rack up some serious goal tallies. Let’s have a look at five of the highest scoring Arsenal games under Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal 7-1 Blackburn (February 2012)
Back in February of 2012, Arsenal were trying their hardest to grab all the points that were available to them in order to secure a top 4 finish. Blackburn Rovers on the other hand were in a much more pressing situation than the Gunners. Nearly 20 years after their famous Premier League victory, they were desperately attempting to claw their way out of the relegation battle. Unfortunately, this game did little to help them as Arsenal ran riot, with Robin Van Persie bagging a hat-trick, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earning himself a brace and Mikel Arteta and Thierry Henry both scored one goal apiece. This truly was a treat for the Arsenal fans.
Arsenal 7-0 Everton (May 2005)
A decade ago Everton came into the game at Highbury with very little hope of a win and were at most playing for a draw. Thankfully for the Gunners, this played straight into the hands of Arsene Wenger’s side who humiliated them thanks to the dream team of Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Robert Pires. Goals came from all over the Arsenal team as Pires earned himself a brace, while teammates Robin Van Persie, Patrick Vieira, Edu, Dennis Bergkamp and Mathieu Flamini all got themselves a goal. This game showed exactly what an Arsene Wenger side can do when they really show up.
Arsenal 7-0 Middlesbrough (January 2006)
In January 2006, Middlesbrough faced an Arsenal side that found themselves in a race to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League. However, it seems that they may have underestimated the Gunners side who managed to put 7 past them in their last year at Highbury. Thierry Henry bagged all of the glory after an impressive hat-trick, while compatriots Gilberto Silva, Phillipe Senderos, Robert Pires and Alexander Hleb all scored as well. It seemed that even after all those years; Highbury was still a worthy stage for some of the most exciting football in the entire world.
Reading 5-7 Arsenal (October 2012)
Arsenal came into the Capital One Cup game as clear favourites and expected an easy ride. However, Reading proved to be no pushovers and truly tested Wenger’s side for all that they were worth. Incredibly, Arsenal went in at half time 4-1 down to reading and it looked like the game was dead and buried. Thankfully, Wenger worked his magic during the interval and the Gunners roared back into life eventually securing a 7-5 victory over Reading. Theo Walcott proved to be the key man in the game after scoring an impressive hat-trick with a goal just before half time and then two more in the second half, including the equaliser in the last minute of normal time. Marouane Chamakh scored two goals himself, while Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny also chipped in with goals to help the team into the next round of the League Cup.
Arsenal 7-0 Slavia Prague (October 2007)
Slavia Prague came into the Champions League knockout game against Wenger’s side hoping to earn themselves a win or at the very least, an away goal. The Gunners denied them of both these luxuries as they cruised to a 7-0 victory at the Emirates. Arsenal ran rampant over the Czech side with both Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott scoring braces and further goals from Alexandr Hleb and Nicklas Bendtner sealed their fate. Prague scoring an own goal early on set the precedent for the evening where Arsenal lit up the Emirates.
So there we have it. Five of Arsene Wenger’s biggest victories as Arsenal manager; all proving why Arsenal have become feared for playing some of the greatest attacking football the world has ever seen.
