Wenger denies Benzema bid has been made

Arsene Wenger has denied claims that Arsenal have made a move for Real Madrid star Karim Benzema. Speaking in Singapore, the Frenchman said: “I don’t know where that story has come from. But that’s not happening at the moment”. Wenger is a well-known admirer of the French international and has monitored him since his days at Lyon.

The Arsenal manager has been on the search for his fourth marquee signing in as many years and it seems Benzema may be that man. Reports from Jermey Wilson of The Telegraph suggest that the Gunners have stepped up their interest in the French international and could make a bid of £40m. Benzema has scored 133 goals in 281 appearances for Real Madrid and would prove a fantastic signing for Wenger. Real Madrid are apparently keen to off load the 27-year-old with new manager Rafael Benitez trying to stamp his mark on the Spanish giants.

Olivier Giroud is currently the main striker at Arsenal, with Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Chuba Akpom all able to play in the striker role as well. The recent hat-trick from youngster Chuba Akpom in the Barclays Asia Cup has put him in contention for a role in the Arsenal attack meaning if Wenger made a move for the Frenchman, he would have a headache picking his starting striker.

Should Wenger make a serious move on Karim Benzema then he will be adding yet another quality player to the star-studded line-up that is already at his disposal.
