Arsenal fans in recent times have called for a new bunch of players to be brought in to, of course, improve the team. Arsene Wenger and the board seem to have started answering those desperate calls with the signings of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and most recently, Petr Cech.
But, what if Cech is the last of the business by the club this summer?
The priorities that Arsenal should have is to sign a striker and a defensively minded midfielder, two players that would hugely benefit the club. Karim Benzema and Morgan Schneiderlin would be most ideal, but unfortunately the latter has just moved to Manchester United. This leaves not only many fans, but undoubtedly the Arsenal board very confused as to who the club can acquire. Without doubt, Francis Coquelin is good enough for the team but he can not solely be relied onand for backup Arsenal don’t have the calibre of players that would come in and do what he has been doing since his return from a loan spell.
Arteta is relatively good, he controls play well, but, of course, he does not have the physical presence that most successful defensive midfielders have in the modern game. Also, Mathieu Flamini… He just simply is not good enough and needs to be let go by the club. The most concerning part of this is that apart from the now unattainable William Carvalho, Arsenal not been linked with a natural defensive midfielder for sometime now; yes, the club has been linked with Chilean superstar Arturo Vidal but, his trade is box-to-box, which the club has in abundance.
The hope is that Shad Forsythe can keep the main players fit, especially Coquelin, but I really wouldn’t take the risk. Arsenal need to sign a defensive midfielder and if they don’t, fans should be worried for that area of the field in the 2015/16 season. Onto my other inclusion; Karim Benzema. Olivier Giroud is a good striker, no doubt, but he isn’t a league winning forward. However, on the other hand, Real Madrid and France star Karim Benzema, if signed, will be.
He is a similar striker to Giroud, in the way he relies on his movement to get him in to goalscoring positions, but is by far the better finisher. He would also be reunited with former Real teammate, Mesut Özil, and they had a fantastic partnership, both on and off the pitch. Adding to the fact he would add class, he’d also boost the morale of the whole squad overall. According to various reports, Arsenal have contacted Real Madrid about a possible move to the North London club, but, it is a 50/50 on this one; my opinion is that the club can and will pull of the signing, but it’ll definitely take some doing by Wenger.
However, regardless of my opinion on the players the club should sign, if no further business is completed in this summer transfer window, it may be too difficult to keep up with the league’s competitiveness and demands. Although, if the entire squad is kept fit, as the backend of last season showed, the players are more than capable of putting up a fight in the upcoming title race.
