Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker bets that we will be seeing the best of Mesut Özil in the 2015/2016 campaign.
The year 2015 marked the return of the German player who has done pretty well, after being sidelined due to injuries. The 26-year-old has found his touch again and helped Arsenal to their second consecutive FA Cup. He has also reached a milestone in his national career after captaining Germany for the first time.
Özil’s fine form has impressed Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger who expects a grandiose season for the player. His international compatriot agrees, with Mertesacker highlighting how essential Özil and his key passes are for this Arsenal team.
“He is one of our key players,” said Mertesacker.
“Him in good fitness, him at his best – there’s a lot more to come from him and the second part of last season when he came back from injury, you could see how important he is for us as a team with his key passes, being in between the lines and always carrying a threat to the opponent.”
Arsenal’s vice-captain also pointed out that fans will witness a better Özil if he is to stay fit and healthy and that he will reach his best if he has a little bit more faith in himself.
“We need to find him and make him better, then he can show his real potential.
“The key will be not to get any injuries or niggles. He’s a good player when he’s fully fit but obviously he needs to gain that little extra, that confidence, to play his best.”
Mertesacker believes that if Özil plays for one entire season, he’ll be back to the form that caught the eyes of the entire world.
“We will see – I’m pretty confident that he has his best and his first full season in front of him.”
