Arsenal’s hat-trick hero Chuba Akpom has been speaking to Arsenal Player about not only his three goals but also his personal ambitions for next season, and the 19-year-old forward says that he believes 2015/16 could be a breakthrough season.
Akpom hit a hat-trick yesterday against a select Singapore XI in an impressive 4-0 win, with Jack Wilshere scoring the other goal, who also had an impressive game from midfield and will continue to cause Arsene Wenger a selection headache going into the new season.
England u20 international Akpom has spent a number of loans away from Arsenal, moves including Brentford, Coventry and most recently, Nottingham Forest, but has admitted that he is now looking to take his chance in North London and hopes to be a part of Arsene Wenger’s plans for next season.
Akpom said: “I’m buzzing for the hat-trick but most importantly I’m buzzing for the win. It was a good team performance but it was even better to get a hat-trick. I’m just hoping I can carry on my form for the rest of the pre-season and take it into the season.
“You’ve got to give 100 per cent because you don’t get this chance often, so when you get it you have to make the most of it. Hopefully the boss has seen that I’ve been working hard in training, that I’ve been working hard on the pitch, and hopefully I can get more game time in the season.”
The young starlet started his Arsenal career back in 2002 as he joined the youth side and has been at the club ever since, making nine appearances for the senior side and has played at a number of levels for England.
“I’ve been at Arsenal since I was six years old, so that’s a few years and I really want to stay here. This season could be a big season for me and with a lot of hard work it could be a breakthrough season for me. The main thing is to stay here and I think the loans have helped me gain experience. I’m just getting better every time.”
