With the news that Carl Jenkinson has secured a year-long loan deal at West Ham, Arsene Wenger believes that both clubs and the player himself have come out on top.
Jenkinson signed a new, long-term contract with boyhood club Arsenal before joining the Hammers on Tuesday and with the emergence of Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers and the experienced Mathieu Debuchy all available for Wenger to choose from, a loan deal for the 23-year-old was the most suitable outcome for another season.
The England international enjoyed a fantastic spell at the club last season, featuring on 32 occasions and gaining a strong connection with the West Ham players.
“He has moved because he had the confidence of West Ham,” the boss told Arsenal Player. “We have the emergence of Hector Bellerin, we have Debuchy, we have Chambers.
“We are a bit congested in an area where you do not find many right backs all over the world.
“He will continue his development with West Ham. I found that all are winners there – [West Ham] and Arsenal and Jenkinson.”
The new contract at Arsenal means that Jenkinson’s long-term future at Arsenal is secured, but with the talented Hector Bellerin at the forefront of the battle between the right backs, questions will arise as to whether fan favourite Jenkinson will ever be able to break on to the first team scene at the club.
