Wenger: We did not bid for Sterling

Raheem Sterling has continually been linked with a move away from Liverpool over the course of the season and Arsenal have been regularly mentioned as a possible destination but it’s Manchester City that have recently completed a deal for the England international.

Arsene Wenger came out and stated that Arsenal were never interested in the young winger due to an abundance of players at the club that can play in the same positions: “I didn’t make a bid because he plays in an area where we have plenty of players. We have [Danny] Welbeck, [Theo] Walcott, [Alex] Chamberlain. [Alexis] Sanchez, [Jack] Wilshere can play there, [Serge] Gnabry. He’s a wide player basically, or behind the striker.”

There’s no doubting the youngster can have a great career ahead of him but his potential hasn’t been fulfilled yet and paying £49m for a player that is no better than what the Gunners already have at their disposal does not make financial sense.

What do you think of the deal? Would you want to see Raheem Sterling in an Arsenal shirt? Or is the fee just too much to pay for potential?
