Vieira’s five best goals
Patrick Vieira; the midfield general, is renowned for his tough tackling and aggressive attitute on the pitch, but the tenacious midfielder was also often on the score sheet for Arsenal and chipped in with some vital goals. I decided to look back at a few of his top goals for Arsenal.
Vieira vs. Liverpool
The Frenchman scored the equaliser in this match against the Reds and it was a very well-worked goal. Vieira was instrumental in the build-up as he laid it off to his striker who then moved it on to Robert Pires. Pires played a weighted through-ball into the box where Vieira coolly chipped over Chris Kirkland.
Vieira vs. Manchester United
Ray Parlour’s corner was headed out by a United defender. The ball was rolling out of the penalty area and Vieira angled his run and then struck a superb shot into the top corner from approximately 22 yards. “It flew in!” yelled the commentator.
Vieira vs. Spurs
Goals against North London rivals Spurs are always savoured, but this one more than others. This was a counter-attacking team goal that started from a Tottenham corner. Thierry Henry advanced out with the ball for about 40 yards before playing the ball through to Dennis Bergkamp. The Dutchman drilled a low cross in which saw Vieira sliding in to finish. A great goal.
Vieira vs. Newcastle United
This goal at St. James’ Park will live long in the memory of Arsenal fans. His attempted through ball was quickly blocked by Newcastle players but in a flash, the bouncing ball was volleyed sweetly into the back of the net from all of 30 yards. It proved to be the winner but it was a goal worthy of winning any match.
Vieira vs. Derby County
This was Vieira’s first ever goal for Arsenal and it was an important one. Tony Adams managed to pull the ball back to the edge of the box where the oncoming Frenchman absolutely leathered the ball into the net.
