Arsenal and Chile superstar Alexis Sanchez has claimed that he and his national teammates knew that they would win the Copa America, having done so for the first time in 99 years.
Sanchez scored the winning goal for Chile who defeated Lionel Messi’s Argentina 4-1 in a penalty shootout, having played out a 0-0 draw after both clubs failed to break the deadlock within 120 minutes.
The 26-year-old said: “We talked about it in Brazil that we were going to win the Copa America.
“This is really a great generation, we deserve this.”
“It is a very important achievement for me, now I will enjoy it and hopefully we can continue on the path we are on.”
Alexis won the presitigious South American tournament after a fantastic debut season for Arsenal, with the Chilean scoring 24 goals, achieving nine assists and helping Arsenal to consecutive FA Cup triumphs, having signed from Barcelona for a whopping £35m transfer fee.
Sanchez went on to discuss the Copa America triumph and hailed it as ‘very special’.
“It was an extra-special tournament, because we were champions. Not to detract from the other teams, because they also did things right.
“It is very special. To beat our rivals leaves more content, but mostly because we won at home.”
Having battled with his country for the entirety of the tournament, it is likely that Alexis will miss the start of the new Premier League season, with the ex-Udinese star playing on 48 occasions for club and country over the last year.
