According to reports in The Telegraph, Arsenal are interested in signing Zenit St. Petersburg defender Ezequiel Garay for a fee of around £13 million.
Garay switched Benfica for Russia last summer and despite winning the league title in his debut season at Zenit, he could be on the move again with Arsene Wenger keen improve his defence.
Despite being a long-term target for Manchester United, Garay moved to Zenit for just £4 million in a transfer that shocked a large part of the football community. The player is reportedly interested in moving to a higher profile league in order to secure his long-term future at the heart of Argentina’s defence.
The defender used to ply his trade in Madrid, and his experience will tempt the Gunners, who will be slowly looking for the long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker in the coming years. Garay could fit that bill: he’s big, strong, good in the air and isn’t uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.
In this market, £13 million seems reasonable. Whether Arsenal make their interest concrete is another matter.
