Arsenal are in no position to challenge financially with the giants according to Arsene Wenger after the club ended the season by retaining the FA Cup.
Wenger was asked about Paul Pogba and competing with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea for the midfielder who has been reported to cost 60 million pounds this summer, however, Wenger dismissed any thoughts that Arsenal would go and spend big this summer despite admitting the success of spending on Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
“Since we started buying again, we have slowly come back to a more competitive level” said the Arsenal boss, according to Mirror Sport, after conceding that the financial powers of others are stronger while celebrating with the FA Cup on the open top bus parade around Islington.
The lack of “stratospheric” figures this summer as the Frenchman says will disappoint many Gunners who only had a third place finish to celebrate this season but did dismantle Aston Villa in the FA Cup Final with a week before ending the Premier League season with a battering of West Bromwich Albion showing promising signs of the future.
Without confirming the funds he has available this summer Wenger would not be pressed onto where he wants to add players this window but the first aim will be a new deal for Theo Walcott who finished with 4 goals in 2 matches from the centre forward role he has longed to play.
When asked about the possibility of a new goalkeeper Wenger kept cards close to his chest with “We will give you the answer at the end of the transfer market.”
In defence of his low spending methods Wenger described Arsenal’s position as “reality” and highlighted the bargain of Santi Cazorla who has gained plaudits throughout European with so many intelligent and aesthetically pleasing sides to his game being showcased since he joined the Gunners.
The other player Wenger pointed towards was Francis Coquelin who has left many purring over his ability to perform the defensive midfield role at a young age with huge pressure on his shoulders. Wenger described his breakthrough midfielder as “One of the best players on the pitch.” After the FA Cup success.
These comments have left many wondering, not only, how many players Wenger wants this summer but how much he, and the club, is willing to spend to make them an Arsenal player.
