Arsenal are interested in signing Villarreal striker Gerard and Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp – both of which would be surprise summer signings.
Reports in The Mirror suggest the Gunners have had scouts watching Gerard all season and will have been impressed with his 16 goal return. Combine that with his buyout clause of just £3 million and it’s easy to see why this one could happen.
Gerard has just one year left on his contract and despite his club’s desire for him to sign a new contract, a move to a Premier League and European giant like Arsenal could be too big to turn down.
Arsene Wenger has yet to make a formal move, but the striker is on the radar and for £3 million this could be one that gets over the line sooner rather than later if the interest in genuine.
The FA Cup finalists are also reportedly interested in Leicester City’s left-sided player Jeffrey Schlupp in a deal that would cost the Gunners £5 million.
Schlupp has had a good season for the Foxes – winning the club’s young player of the season award – and would provide long-term competition for Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal at left-back and would be an option for the wing in more defensive lineups.
Having said that you have to wonder whether this interest is genuine or whether it is a player’s agent trying to force a bigger contract or another team to bid for the player.
