Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny could be given another chance at Premier League football as Ronald Koeman looks to replace injured stopper Fraser Forster in the short-term.
According to reports in The Express, Southampton are very interested in signing the Polish shot-stopper on a season-long loan. It is quite ironic that the South Coast club are interested–it was against them that Szczesny’s season collapsed. He had a poor game; Arsenal lost 2-0 and he was rumoured to have been caught smoking shortly after the game.
Szczesny has been replaced between the sticks by David Ospina, who despite his deficiencies, has been a solid and more reliable choice over the enigmatic Pole. The competition for Arsenal’s no. 1 jersey could be increased as the Gunners look set to bring Petr Cech to the club.
A loan move makes perfect sense for all parties here. Southampton have their long-term goalie already in Fraser Forster, but need someone to fill the void for a season without shelling out big money. Arsenal want a more reliable, experienced player for the short-term but aren’t ready to give up on Szczesny, while the player just wants to play games.
Let’s hope this one happens. It would clear the space for Arsenal to sign a top class, older goalkeeper whilst also giving Szczesny one last chance in the Premier League to see if he’s good enough.
