German international Mesut Özil is close to finishing his second season with us and some would argue that he has not lived up to the £42.5m fee we had to offer Spanish club Real Madrid to bring him to Arsenal. However, in my opinion, he’s more than justified it. He had a great start at the club, only to suffer a knee injury a few months later, ruling him out for over a month, an injury that meant his performances levels depleted and were severely affected.
The start of this season had started as the last finished, poorly. However, in the away game against Chelsea, he suffered a knee injury yet again, giving him a lengthy spell on the sidelines of three months. Even though for the team this was a huge blow, I have the opinion that it was quite the blessing in disguise for Özil; it allowed him to bulk up and have the right physique to cope with the physical challenges of the Premier League and upon his return, it happened. He really has been on another level since he came back and has come close to the form we were all so used to seeing of the German star.
With the addition of Chilean attacker Alexis Sánchez, he now has the class player in attack that went missing in the 2013/14 season. The two have established a great partnership in the recent months, helping Arsenal to a fantastic run of form in the latter part of this season. His partnerships with Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud respectively make the trio a crucial part in the Arsenal side.
The German has recorded a relatively impressive 6 goals and 9 assists in 34 appearances this season. Considering that he was out for 3 months in the middle of the season, I’d hope you agree it is indeed impressive. Özil‘s best game this season came in the 4-1 thrashing of Liverpool at home where he bagged only 1 goal, but ran the show. Most attacks came from him and his link ups with his fellow attackers, especially Ramsey and Alexis were stunning/
He is debated as the best player since the days of Henry and Bergkamp, being the catalyst for hopefully many more marquee signings like Alexis Sánchez. Many Arsenal fans are hopeful that Wenger can pull off signings like Benzema and Reus in the foreseeable future to compliment him in attack. For me, I want the former more. Özil’s was with him in his Real Madrid days and they formed a great partnership. I’d be over the moon if they were to be reunited at Arsenal.
