According to reports in the Mirror, Arsenal are planning an audacious move for Liverpool and England wonderkid Raheem Sterling. Liverpool have been unable to tie up a new contract for Sterling and Arsene Wenger is looking to take advantage of the contract stand-off and add to his British core at the Emirates Stadium.
Talks between Sterling and Liverpool have been put on hold until the summer. The player is only on £20,000-a-week and believes he should be offered a wage closer to £120,000-a-week
Arsenal will not be the only club sniffing around Anfield for their prized asset, with the contract situation alerting Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Instead of slotting him in at centre-forward or wing-back, it is thought Arsene Wenger would build around him and base a lot of Arsenal’s future plans around Europe’s ‘Golden Boy’.
Arsenal tried to sign Sterling before he went to Liverpool, but were thwarted by the Anfield club. Wenger has reportedly now made discreet enquiries to try and bring him back to the capital.
While it sounds like a move that could be logical, there are many stumbling blocks. The relationship between Arsenal and Liverpool is not great after the Luis Suarez saga. In addition to that, you just can’t see a player of Sterling’s age leaving his club just yet – especially to a club in the same country. It all just feels like an agent trying to squeeze more money out of Liverpool.
A nice idea, but it’s probably not going to happen. We can dream though. Maybe an exchange for Theo Walcott – who is a Liverpool fan – could swing the balance but it’s unlikely.
