According to the Daily Express, Arsène Wenger is planning to stun the football world by annihilating Arsenal’s transfer record to sign French star Paul Pogba from Juventus. The plot hasn’t come as a surprise as the Gunners have been linked with Pogba on many occasions in the past.
The 21-year old signed a deal worth £70,000 last October keeping him at the club until 2019 but that still hasn’t put off the interest of potential suitors. Wenger is looking to bolster his squad as well as adding to his French contingent which includes full internationals Laurent Koscielny, Olivier Giroud and Mathieu Debuchy.
£80m does seem a little bit extravagant and uncharacter-like from Arsène Wenger but with injuries now a regular commodity throughout their season, Pogba could be the future of Arsenal having drawn comparisons from Gunners legend Patrick Vieira.
Vieira, talking to the Daily Mail, said eople say he’s like me — I guess we have similar power in possession and he’s strong, quite tall, an elegant player,’
‘But in his head he’s more attacking than I ever was. I would win more balls but he’s more technical. He’ll become one of the best in the world.’
This alleged move from Arsenal was provoked by the news that Barcelona are looking at £25m-rated Morgan Schneiderlin to strengthen their midfield after Arsenal have been linked with the Southampton man for some time now as Wenger builds for the future, he is looking for the latest crop of French talent.
Schneiderlin was desperate to leave St Mary’s for a club in the Champions League last summer, but the Saints stood firm and managed to keep hold of the Frenchman. However, the 25-year-old will again evaluate his future at the end if the season as he still dreams of joining a ‘big club’. He admitted after the summer window: “A career passes quickly and I want to play for a big club. Today I am at Southampton, it’s going well. “We’ll see at the end of the season if [a transfer] will happen.
Personally, I think an £80m move for Paul Pogba would be unnecessary. Simply because it is such a big transfer fee which Arsène Wenger is not often likened with, not only will it almost double Arsenal’s transfer record, it will smash the Premier League’s as well. If Arsène Wenger was serious about replacing Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini in the first-team, a more feasibly-priced Morgan Schneiderlin would be my vote.
