Arsenal continue to be interested in Atletico Madrid’s midfielder Mario Suarez and could make a move in the latter stages of the January transfer window.
According to reports in the Express, Arsenal have had scouts watch Suarez and have been long-time admirers.
Despite the impressive and surprising form of Francis Coquelin, Arsene Wenger is still searching for depth and quality in the defensive midfield area. Mikel Arteta has been ruled out for up to three months, while Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey both continue to struggle with injuries frequently. As for Mathieu Flamini, it looks like Arsene Wenger has finally realised that the Frenchman lacks the necessary quality to represent the Arsenal on a consistent basis anymore.
Arsene Wenger said before the stunning 2-0 win at the Etihad that he wants to bring “1 or 2 defensive minded” players in this window, and Suarez could fit that bill.
As for a fee, anything under £10 million represents decent value. Any more and you have to question why we aren’t going for bigger names. Someone like Suarez could be a stop-gap for a huge money signing in the Summer.
This one could have legs, as Atletico Madrid are already chasing a potential replacement with the La Liga Champions reportdely chasing Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva.
Whatever happens, it looks as if Arsenal will do business in the next few days and weeks. Strap yourselves in and enjoy the ride!
